Film Opening Inspiration

My group's genre is Film Noir. Film Noir is a genre of film about Hollywood crime dramas. Usually films categorized in the Film Noir genre are focused on crime dramas that have a somewhat "cynical attitude." While the decision to make a Film Noir opening was a group decision, I was personally inspired to choose this drama because I knew it would make a great film opening. Due to its fast-paced nature, you can often introduce deep plot points at the very beginning of the story, which I knew would be the most interesting approach to a film opening that could only be a few minutes long. Noir films are also predominantly older and usually black and white. The genre is different and interesting, so I knew I would enjoy creating a film opening for this genre.
One Noir film that helped spur my interest in the genre was the film, "The Third Man." From the very beginning of the film, its clear that a lot of drama and action is about to occur. The black and white film makes special use of dark, contrasting shadows to emphasize early action. Furthermore, the use of upbeat music despite the heavier content made a very interesting start. Already, there is drama. The film occurs in Vienna directly after World War II. It shows members of the black mafia completing shady business. Clearly, the action starts at the very beginning. Just from watching the very beginning of the film, I wanted to continue watching and see what else was to come. This feeling is what every director or writer is hoping to create for a viewer through their film opening, so I knew that this movie must truly be a good one. This helped to create an interest in the genre for me.
I wanted to have fun with my opening and that includes having plenty of action occurring. Due to this, I knew Film Noir would be the perfect genre. Another film, "L.A. Confidential" helped to further spark my interest in creating a Film Noir opening. L.A. Confidential is a very popular film within the genre. The film follows detectives in L.A., searching to solve a crime they have been faced with. The film garnered so much popularity due to its face-paced nature and the humor it presented alongside the intense drama of the crime they were attempting to solve. This film definitely lived up to its popularity as I ended up really enjoying it. The feeling that it created and the way it drew me in throughout the film was a feeling that I knew I wanted to recreate in my own film opening. This film created even more inspiration for me and truly solidified in my mind that I wanted to do the Film Noir genre.
Ultimately, both films together helped create the inspiration and motivation for my own film opening. The Third Man showed me ways to use shadows and mystery to build up the movie that is to come. L.A. Confidential, with its success and award winning status, showed me the potential for my film opening within the genre and showed me what I need to include in order to create an eye-catching opening. With both of these films in mind, I can bring these different ideas and techniques into broader conversations with my group, in order to create a film opening that is truly a piece of a Film Noir movie.
